With the participation of Takashi Kadowaki, President of the Japan Federation of Medical Societies, a “Request for an increase in the overall amount of scientific research grants” was submitted to Masahito Moriyama, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

Last Friday, September 6, a “Request for an increase in the overall amount of the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research” was submitted to the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Mr. Masahito Moriyama, with the participation of Mr. Takashi Kadowaki, President of the Japanese Federation of Medical Societies. We would like to inform you that Mr. Kazunari Higashihara, representative of the Union of Bioscience Societies of Japan, made the following report on this matter.

To the Federation of Academic Societies that endorsed the request for an increase in the amount of Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research

Thank you very much for your support regarding the campaign to request an increase in the amount of Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research.

Today, Friday, September 6, we submitted a written request to Mr. Masahito Moriyama, Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. We had previously asked the RENGO representatives to coordinate their schedules, and we were accompanied by the representatives of the Medical Union, the Chemical Union, and the Agricultural Science Society who wished and were able to attend. We had an unusually long meeting time of 20 minutes for such a petition, during which I gave a brief explanation and the Minister gave his remarks afterwards.

The Minister stated that he understands and appreciates the content of the request, that he requested a slight increase in the current budget request, even though it is related to international relations, and that he would like to continue to improve the situation as much as possible. We are doing everything we can to improve the situation.

I expressed my gratitude to Minister Moriyama for his active support for the “Let’s get a doctorate” program and the funding of the Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research, and he said that he is also working in parallel with us to develop a career path after the “Let’s get a doctorate” program.

We have taken the first step, but going forward, we would like to move as quickly as possible toward submitting requests to other ministries, although under the circumstances it may take some time before the election.

Thank you again for your support and cooperation with this request.

Please share the above information with the academic societies to which you belong.

Thank you for your continued support.

Kazunari Higashihara, Representative of the Federation of Biological Sciences Societies
