(Purpose)
Article 1. The Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine shall establish the Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine Research Encouragement Award to encourage original research on tropical medicine by young researchers belonging to the Society.
(Awardees)
Article 2. In principle, one of these awards shall be selected each year in accordance with the following guidelines.
2. The award shall be given to the author of an outstanding original paper published in the Journal of the Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine or other related journals during the past two years, with the last day of December of the year prior to the year of selection. However, if the paper is not in the Journal of the Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine, the content must have been presented by the author at the Congress of the Society.
3. eligibility for the award
1. in the case of co-authored papers, the first author must be the first author.
2. be under 40 years of age on 31 March of the year of selection.
3. have been a member of the Society for three terms at the time of application
4. the nature of the paper
1. the paper should be on tropical medicine
2. the research must have been carried out mainly at the site of the disease epidemic or in Japan; 3. the research must have been published in English; 4. the research must have been carried out in English; 5. the research must have been carried out in English
3. the paper should be published in English.
(Selection Committee)
Article 3. A selection committee shall be established for the selection of recipients of the Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine Research Encouragement Award.
2.The Selection Committee shall consist of all the Directors.
3. The Selection Committee shall be chaired by the President.
4. At least 1/2 of the members of the Selection Committee must be present at a meeting of the Selection Committee. Submission of a letter of proxy shall not be deemed as attendance.
(Selection)
Article 4. Selection shall be carried out as follows:
1. At the beginning of each year, the Selection Committee shall ask the Councilors to nominate candidates for the award and to prepare a record of their nominations. Members of the Selection Committee may also act as nominators.
2. The Selection Committee examines the nominated candidates and decides on the winner by a secret ballot with a majority of the valid votes cast.

Article 5. The chairperson shall report on the selection process and results to the Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees.
(Awarding of awards)
Article 6. The President shall present the awardee with a certificate and supplementary prize at the annual conference.
(Award lecture)
Article 7. The awardee shall present the content of the award-winning paper at the Congress of the Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine in the current year.
(Supplementary provisions)
Article 8. If any doubt arises as to the interpretation and application of these rules, the Board of Directors shall decide on the matter.
2 In addition to the provisions of these Rules, other necessary matters relating to selection shall be determined separately by the Board of Directors.
3 Amendments to these Rules and Regulations shall be approved by the Board of Trustees when deemed necessary by the Board of Directors.
Supplementary provisions
- These Regulations, approved by the Executive Committee on 31 October 1990 and by the Board of Trustees and the General Assembly on 1 November 1990, shall come into force on 1 January 1991.
- Amendments to these Rules and Regulations shall come into force as from 1 January 1996.
- Amendments to the present Code shall enter into force on 1 January 1997.
- Amendments to the present Rules shall enter into force on 1 January 2003. Regarding Article 2.3 (Qualification of award recipients), it is only necessary to fulfil the conditions of either the old or the new Rules for 2003 only.
- The amendments to the present Rules shall enter into force on 1 January 2005.
- The amendments to the Code shall enter into force on 1 January 2010.
- The amendments to these Rules shall enter into force on 1 January 2013.
- The amendments to these Rules, which were approved by the Board of Directors on 21 October 2009 and the Board of Trustees on 22 October 2009, shall enter into force on 1 January 2010.
- the amendments to the Code were approved by the Board of Directors on 19 March 2020 and by the Board of Trustees on the same day, and shall enter into force on 19 March 2020
- revisions to these Rules were approved by the Board of Directors on 7 October 2022 and the Board of Trustees on 9 October 2022 and shall enter into force on 9 October 2022.
Matters of arrangement concerning the selection rules for the ‘Japanese Society for Tropical Medicine Research Encouragement Award’ in accordance with Article 8.

- The members of the Selection Committee may nominate additional candidates if no nominations from councilors have been received by the deadline
- the forms of the nomination and candidate statement shall be as in the Appendix (Form 1 and Form 2).
- The nomination form for the candidate for the award mentioned in Article 4.2 should exclude those directly related to the candidate, such as the candidate’s principal professor, co-authors of the subject paper, etc.
- when discussing the candidates and voting on the recipient of the award under Article 5, if a member of the selection committee is the candidate’s principal professor, co-author of the subject paper or directly related person, he/she shall decline to discuss and vote on the candidate concerned in the selection committee.
- If the same paper as the candidate for the Award is also the subject of another conference award, it must be excluded from the selection for the Award.
- In voting, a blank ballot shall be treated as valid and a ballot with a name other than that of the candidate shall be treated as invalid.
- If no candidate receives a majority of the valid votes cast in a ballot of three or more candidates, a deciding vote shall be held for the top two candidates
- In the event of a tie, the Chairman shall decide.
