MASAMICHI AIKAWA MEDAL Selection Rules

(Purpose)

Article 1. The MASAMICHI AIKAWA MEDAL shall be awarded by the Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine in commemoration of the achievements of the late Dr Masamichi Aikawa in malariology, for research and achievements that have contributed to the development of malaria science.

(Awardees)

Article 2. One person shall be selected each year in principle, who has made outstanding achievements in basic or applied research in malariology and whose contribution to malariology has been recognized as significant.

2. The eligibility for the award requires that the nominee has been a member of the Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine for at least five years at the time of nomination.

3. the selection criteria are as follows.

1. the nominee must have published an outstanding original paper in malariology in a relevant journal and be the first or liaison author of the paper; 2. the nominee must have published a paper in a relevant journal and be the first or liaison author of the paper The research concerned should have been reported at a conference of the Society.

2. the applicant should have made outstanding achievements in clinical research and epidemic control research on malaria, and should be recognized as making a significant contribution to the conquest of the disease.

(Selection Committee)

Article 3. A Selection Committee shall be established for the selection of recipients of the Masamichi Aikawa Award.

2.The Selection Committee shall consist of all Board members.

3.The Selection Committee shall be chaired by the President.

4.The presence of at least one half of the members of the Selection Committee is required for a meeting of the Selection Committee. A letter of proxy does not count as attendance.

(Selection)

Article 4. At the beginning of each year, the Selection Committee shall ask the Councilors to nominate candidates for the award and to prepare a record of their nominations. Members of the Selection Committee may also act as nominators.

2.The Selection Committee examines the nominated candidates and decides on the winner by secret ballot with a majority of the valid votes cast.

(Reporting)

Article 5. The chairperson shall report on the selection process and results to the Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees.

(Awards)

Article 6. The Chairman shall present the awardee with a certificate and medal at the annual conference.

(Awarded lectures)

Article 7. The awardee shall present the contents of the award-winning paper at the Congress of the Japanese Society of Tropical Medicine in the current year.

(Supplementary provisions)

Article 8. If any doubt arises concerning the interpretation and application of these Regulations, the Board of Directors shall decide.

2. In addition to the provisions of these rules, other necessary matters relating to selection shall be determined separately by the Board of Directors.

3. Amendments to these Rules and Regulations shall be approved by the Board of Trustees when deemed necessary by the Board of Directors.

Supplementary provisions.
  1. These Regulations, which were approved by the Board of Trustees on 5 November 2011 and reported to the General Assembly, shall come into force as on 1 January 2012
  2. Amendments to these Rules and Regulations were approved by the Board of Directors on 19 March 2020 and the Board of Trustees on the same day, and shall enter into force on 19 March 2020.
  3. The amendments to these Rules were approved by the Board of Directors on 7 October 2022 and the Board of Trustees on 9 October 2022 and shall enter into force on 9 October 2022.

  1. The members of the Selection Committee may nominate additional candidates if no nominations from councilors have been received by the deadline
  2. The forms for nomination forms and candidate statements are attached (Forms 1 and 2)
  3. In voting, a blank sheet of paper shall be treated as valid, and any name other than that of a candidate shall be treated as invalid.
  4. If no candidate receives a majority of the valid votes cast in a ballot of three or more candidates, a deciding vote shall be held for the top two candidates
